This is my first blog post. Ever. John approached me about providing some content for the site, a request I apprehensively decided to oblige. I usually only share the ridiculous (read: idiotic) thoughts rattling around in my brainbox via my twitter account (@mnormyle), so I told him that I would probably just end up fleshing out these would-be tweets (that likely only appeal to me) on the website. John quickly replied with a classic John admonishment. I told him I couldn’t make any promises, but I would do my best to be serious from time-to-time. That is how we got here; boring story over.

Now, on to the post… a friend of mine recently mentioned how he got tickets to see Jonathan Richman, and I, not familiar with the name, asked who Jonathan Richman is. He informed me that he was the lead singer of The Modern Lovers, a band that I was only familiar with from LCD Soundsystem name-dropping them on “Losing My Edge.” He suggested I get their eponymous 1976 debut, which I promptly “purchased.” I have been enjoying it a lot, and my favorite song so far is “I’m Straight.” It is a bizarre love song where Jonathan presents himself as a better alternative to the drug-addled “Hippie Johnny” because he takes in the world “straight.” The thing I love about it is that Jonathan’s stilted delivery seems to betray his position as a drug-free man. Find the video below and maybe catch him at Bowery Ballroom (NY, NY) on 11/1 or at the Bell House (Brooklyn, NY) on 11/2 if you enjoy the song.
